Lost Levenshulme is a publication I put together for Levenshulme Old Library, looking at the history and hidden stories of Levenshulme, a district in South Manchester.

Issue One features:

  • The Levenshulme Landgrabbers: The story of the people who reclaimed local land for community use.

  • What Happened to Frank Tilsley?: The forgotten novelist from Levenshulme who made his mark on British literature.

  • Levyhenge: A photo essay on Manchester’s only stone circle, found in Cringle Park.

  • Ghost Signs: A personal exploration of the fading, historic signs found on buildings.

  • Pipistrello: A ghost story inspired by the hidden pet cemetery in Highfield Country Park.

Featuring words by Marie Crook, Ella Sprakarn and Joanna Tilsley, among others, and photos by Laura Deane.

Issue Two features:

  • What Lies Beneath: Mapping the ancient waterways that run beneath the roads, pavements and parks in Levenshulme.

  • How to Get Lost in Levenshulme: A wayward photo tour of Levenshulme, taking in some of the figures who played a part in shaping national history before slipping from view.

  • Secret Lake Stories: A piece looking at the Secret Lake, a wild body of water hidden behind an industrial site.

  • Hell is a City: A personal piece about wandering Levenshulme looking for filming locations from a noir classic.

  • Tripe: A short story inspired by Nutsford Vale.

Featuring words and images by David Gaffney, Jez Hall, Emily Zurowski, Robert Parkinson and Verity Platt.
